Gallery–Boxes: Miscellaneous Styles

Boxes labeled MS01-MS06 are made of African Blackwood, with various wave pattern ornament on the sides and eccentric or rose engine patterns on the top, and are embellished with natural stone cabochons or Swarovski crystals. They were made from wood blanks that were rejected by the musical instrument manufacturers because of various slight defects and were originally intended to serve as components of oboes, clarinets, etc. They are 1 3/8" in diameter and about 1 1/2 - 1 5/8" high. The images show a side and top view of each piece.

Boxes MS07 and MS08 are what I call the "clamshell" series. They have an unornamented exterior and the interior is hollowed with the rose engine cutter so there is an internal lobed, fluted contour. They are inlaid with US coins, which are also cut with the rose engine pattern, and the boxes are made of cocobolo, and are about 2" in diameter.

Boxes MS09-MS11 are miniature urn shapes, about 2" in diameter. MS09 is Mopane with African Blackwood and a synthetic tortoise flame finial with fluted spiral, and a wave pattern on the body. Boxes MS10-MS11 are made of Mexican Kingwood and African Blackwood, with a spiral pattern cut on the body and rosette disc of Pink Ivory inside the lid, and either a flame finial or rosette disk on the top of the lid.

Boxes MS12-MS14 are all made of African Blackwood. MS12 is a drum design, 2" in diameter, with inlaid plugs of simulated amber. The second view shows the rose pattern inside the lid. MS13-MS14 are rose engine shaped, 1/3/8" in diameter.
