Evans Ornamental Turning Lathe

Evans describes this lathe in his book, Ornamental Turning (see Bibliography), as "a lathe of the most modern description, ...a 5-in centre lathe with traversing mandrel, which is bored throughout its entire length; and, as all lathes of high-class manufacture should do, runs in hardened steel collars; the mandrel is also perfectly hard." He was quite proud of his overhead motion apparatus, describing it as "without question the most useful and convenient at present designed, and is now well-known as Evans's Improved." By all accounts, Evans made excellent lathes, with some innovative improvements being noteworthy on his machines.
