[WP02] Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa)

This wood grows on the west coast of Central America. It has brilliant colors of orange, yellow and even purple when freshly cut, but soon turns to a deep uniform dark reddish-orange-brown hue. Its dust is irritating to some and can cause respiratory discomfort or contact dermatitis. It has larger pores than blackwood, but with its fine uniform texture takes an excellent cut with the ornamental cutting tool. Its wild and extravagant figure can sometimes conflict with an ornamental turning pattern of cuts and look too busy. It is a heavy wood with a density of 61-75 pounds per cubic foot (990 to 1200 kilograms per cubic meter). It is an oily wood, exhibits great stability in use, takes a fine finish and is very good for ornamental turning purposes.
